Webb, Paul. (2009).Towards an Integrated Learning Strategies Approach To Promoting Scientific Literacy in the South African Context.International Journal of Environmental & Science Education, 4(3), 313-334.
This article describes a study that promoted the use of scientific writing, discussion, and argumentation in the classroom. The study found a correlation between the focus on scientific literacy through the use of science notebooks, discussions, encouraging opposing views from others, and the integration of all strategies discussed in the article with the increase in several aspects of students’ writing and speaking.
This figure gave me the best picture of what the study was all about. The idea that the information input is just the first step in the process of promoting scientific literacy. Overall improvement is achieved with the integration of different strategies throughout an investigation. There is not just one tool that works best, but a series and combination of strategies that need to be implemented together in order to meet the needs of the students in their progression towards scientific literacy.
